Cisco today announced a new green data center in Allen, Texas, with an 650-293 architecture deploying Cisco’s entire data center technology portfolio spanning computing, switching, and data storage access to support Cisco’s internal private cloud and deliver Information Technology (IT) as a service.

The new data center demonstrates the value of a network-based approach through improved resilience, performance and use of resources, while delivering IT services such as video, mobility, security, and collaboration to Cisco employees, customers, partners, and other constituents.

In 2007 Cisco created a vision to deliver IT as a service and developed a long-range plan to deliver that vision through data center consolidation, virtualization, and cloud computing.

Cisco’s newest data center combines the best in 650-293 environment-friendly facility design, green approaches to power and cooling, and an architectural approach optimized for virtualization and cloud computing, with the aim of delivering “everything as a service.”

Along with technology from key partners like EMC, NetApp, and VMware, the new data center is a showcase for Cisco solutions, including the Cisco Unified Computing System?, Nexus 7000 Series switches?,Nexus 5000 Series switches?, Nexus 1000V Virtual Switch?, MDS storage networking switches, Data Center Network Manager and NX-OS, a comprehensive data center operating system that spans the Cisco data center portfolio.
Apple’s iOS has over 300,000 apps while Android has more than 100,000. At last count, Palm had 5,400. Analysts have estimated that HP needs 30,000 to 50,000 if it hopes to compete.

There was no mention during the event about precise numbers, but Jeff Scott, founder of review site 148 Apps, said developers are key to the success of these products.

“HP have brought the hardware and have a fantastic OS, but getting developer mindshare, getting them to engage with the device and actually release apps, that is what is going to get consumers to part with their cash.”

During the San Francisco event, HP outlined a number of partnerships it has forged to bring content to webOS devices, including a free Kindle e-reader app from Amazon and the chance to purchase subscriptions to magazines such as Sports Illustrated and People.

HP’s announcement comes amid growing rumours that Apple will unveil an iPad 2 in the coming months.

The blogosphere reports that the second generation device will be thinner, lighter and come with a front facing camera like a number of competitors that have followed in its footsteps.

Apple has sold nearly 15 million iPads since the tablet computer hit store shelves last April.Four analysts contacted by Reuters estimated the world’s largest maker of network equipment will eliminate up to 4,000 jobs in coming months, with the average forecast at 3,000. That would represent 4 percent of Cisco’s 73,000 permanent workers. It also has an undisclosed number of temporary contractors.

Cisco’s previous record layoffs was set in fiscal 2002, when the company shed some 2,000 jobs, according to Canaccord Genuity analyst Paul Mansky.

That was back when the Internet bubble burst, ending a period of unrestrained spending on technology products as Internet start-ups and old school companies alike rushed to establish a Web presence.

Wall Street analysts, who were disappointed with the low revenue forecast that Cisco gave for the current quarter and the coming fiscal year, said they were pleased to see Cisco taking quick and decisive action on restructuring.

“It’s hard to criticize the pace and scope,” said Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Partners. “We all love the billion dollars in cost savings, but you never cheer people losing their jobs.”

Nonetheless, Cisco shares fell 4.8 percent on Wednesday, as analysts said it would take many quarters to revive the company.
