Why does my nike sport kit not measure distance?

i just bought my nike sport kit yesterday and already it is giving me problems. The sensor works, my ipod can find the signal. It measures time and and the voice talks to me. However, when I returned from my run it had not measured distance at all. The sensor was in a shoe wallet attached to my laces – it should have worked. Has anyone else had this problem? Any tips?
